Do you want the good news or bad news first?

Most of the time when someone asks me if I want the good news or the bad news first, I almost always say the bad news so then if it makes me feel bad I still have the good news to feel better about.

Here is your bad news.   Learn this.

Here is your good news.  Other than what we do in class today, there will be no additional homework for the weekend.  Waaaaaaahooooooo!

Do you remember something you did 6 years ago?
Hmmmmmmm, yes I do remember, the husband and I vacationed to Portland Oregon.

Before doing this word problem, share with your group any memories you have from 6 years ago.

Now onto the problem.

The sum of Eli and Cece's ages is 60.
Six years ago, Eli was 3 times as old as Cece.
Find Eli's age now.

SET UP the system of equations, then solve.  (emphasis on the set up, that is what I am most interested in.)
