Coffee and Doughnuts

Coffee and Doughnuts.  Two of my favorite things, but that is besides the point.  Read below and solve the word problem.

On Monday Mr. Goetsch brought 10 cups of coffee and 5 doughnuts for the math department at the cost of $16.50.  It turns out the doughnuts were way more popular, so on Tuesday he bought 5 cups of coffee and 10 doughnuts for $14.25.  How much was each cup of coffee.

Solve.

Then, share your favorite doughnut in the comments.  I go through doughnut favorite phases.  My current favorite is a cruller.

Correlation

Positive Correlation:

The weight of the tube and the speed of the waterslide.

(One thing increases the other increases)

Negative Correlation:

The number of hours she sleeps at night and the length of her nap.
(As one thing decreases the other increases.)

No Correlation:

The the number of siblings you have and your favorite number.

(No relation)

Mine is 1 and 13 because I know you wanted to know.

In the comments, give me two things that are positively correlated or negatively correlated.

If you had to choose today?

My husband I went to the Badger game on Saturday.  The babysitter cost us what we paid for each ticket, parking was one-fifth of a ticket, and food was double the parking.  If we spent $324, what did we pay for both tickets?

In the comments post:
1.  the answer to this problem
2.  If you had to choose today, what college would you like to go to?

Simplify

A simple life has a different meaning and a different value for every person. But, basically it means eliminating all but the essential, and spending your time doing what’s important to you.
It means getting rid of many of the things you do so you can spend time with people you love and do the things you love. It means getting rid of the clutter so you are left with only that which gives you value.
In math it is no different.  To simplify means you get rid of things/clutter (grouping symbols, exponents and operations) so that you are left with a value.
Simplify, and post your answer in the comments.
10 × 4 - 2 × (4² ÷ 4) ÷ 2 ÷ 1/2 + 9

Meet my Dad

This is my Dad.

High School math teacher for 41 years.  I had him for 2 of those years.......honors geo, and honors pre-calc.

A few years ago we were playing cribbage and I mentioned how we now intro the unit circle at the end of honors algebra 2, and so I was going to have to put that lesson together.

The next day this HANDWRITTEN packet shows up at my door..........with a donut.........my dad always brings me a donut.

I thought about re-typing the notes, but for sentimental reasons, I just did not want to.  So without further ado go to bb9 and open unit circle notes.  (and yes, he still writes in cursive........who does that??)

Before leaving this page if you want to comment about your dad, his job, his favorite food, activity you do together.  Go for it.  I love reading that stuff.

Groundhogs day.

There is a Bill Murray movie Ground Hogs Day, where he just keeps waking up on the same day over and over again.

Since last Thursday was ground hogs day.  The math department wore the same clothes Friday as they did Thursday to go along with this idea.   Person that gets called out first brings doughnuts for the department.

Here I am with some of my math colleagues THURSDAY.

Here I am with the 2 students that called me out FRIDAY.

This sweater was a little distinctive to be a good choice for this game.   You live and you learn.

Answer any of the questions in the comments.

Ever seen the movie groundhogs day?

Is there a day in your life you would relive?

Favorite Doughnut?

Doing our best job.

When I want to do my best possible job at something, I know there are things I need to do other than WANT to do a good job.  I believe we all want to do our best job.  Wanting is easy, doing is hard.

In order to save me from my lazier, procrastinating self I found I need to do these things.

1.  Treat my to-do list like a date with another person.  If I am going to meet a friend at 6, I meet the friend at 6.  I treat things like grade papers 7pm or workout 5:30am the same way.

2.  Surround myself with other people who do quality work.  I can always learn from their efforts, and I like having them hold me accountable.  (Maybe vote yes to the seat change if moving could help you.)

3.  Reward myself.  (yep I said it)  If I do X, then you can mindlessly look at your phone, have a diet mountain dew, eat a salad the size of a small child (remember that is my favorite food, that is not punishment.) take a nap and/or go to bed early, impulse buy, no guilt.

4.  Read some inspirational quotes or listen to motivating songs etc, that remind me to not waste this one precious go around at life.

What is one (or more) things that work for you to do your best job?
